What are Filipino Spring Rolls?
Lumpia or Filipino fried spring rolls are a savory treat you don’t want to miss out on. Made with fresh vegetables and ground meat (usually a combination of ground pork and beef), this is an ideal entree to set the mood while waiting for the main course.
How can I make Filipino Spring Rolls?
This recipe is easy and customizable: you can choose different vegetables or meat to play with flavors. Adding potato (and meat) will help the ingredients bind together.
For Filipino Spring Rolls:
- egg roll wrappers: made from scratch or store-bought
- 1/2 lb ground pork
- 1/2 lb ground beef
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup potato, grated
- 1 large onion, roughly chopped
- 1 large carrot, grated
- 1 cup green beans
- salt to taste
For a simple Asian-style dip sauce:
- 2 tbs vinegar
- 2 tbs soy sauce
- 1 clove garlic, chopped
- Wash, peel, grate and/or chop all of your vegetables. Mix everything in a large bowl. Add potato last (it turns brown quickly and you want to avoid that). Now add meat.
- Add egg and salt. Mix until all ingredients are well-combined.
- Wrapping and frying: before using egg roll wrappers, you have to moisten them in cold water. Do this right before wrapping. Leaving the wrappers wet for too long will cause them to fall apart. Put the desired amount of filling in the middle of the wrapper, fold over the top and then in at the sides (where the wrapper touches the filling). Now create a tube-like shape by rolling the remainder of your wrapper. Make sure everything is wrapped tight and there’s no filling falling out.
- Fry on medium heat until rolls turn brownish-gold.
- Enjoy warm and serve with dip sauce!
